Using the Right File Type: Raster Vs Vector Files
When it comes to media, you want to optimize file loads without compromising visual quality. To optimize an image means to reduce its file size using either a plugin or a script. You can do this by saving these files in memory-friendly formats or by compressing them.
Regarding file types, you have a choice between saving your images as raster or vector files. Raster media is saved as JPEG, GIF, or PNG files. Vector media is saved as SVG, APS, AI, or PDF files. Higher quality images can make websites load slowly.
With raster files, image media is stored in pixels. Every pixel has a defined color, position, and proportion based on resolution. These images do not resize or beautifully; they are often blurry or distorted when you alter their original size. Raster files are best suited for photographic images.

If you’re interested in compressing your media files, you can compress them using lossy or lossless compression. While lossy compression will guarantee your site the fastest page loads, both are excellent options for improving speed performance.
With lossy compression, you reduce your media’s overall file size by deleting some data. The result is a drastically smaller media file with a noticeable reduction in image quality. Once you compress a file using this technique, you cannot revert back to its original quality. So if you have to need to pare a large media file and preserving media quality is not your top priority, a lossy compression is a great option.
With lossless compression, you reduce the file size (albeit not as substantially as with lossy compression) and maintain your image quality. Lossless compresses media data. With lossless compression, your media must be uncompressed before it can be rendered on your webpage.

There are many available options for downloadable plugins, and it can sometimes be confusing as to which plugins you need, to keep your website safe and secure. All plugins, in one way or another, will suggest that you need them to improve the internal functions of your site.
For example, if your website utilizes a blogging platform like WordPress, you are most likely running a multitude of plugins. WordPress is known to promote the use of multiple plug-ins to better utilize its services. Every plugin you implement will ultimately slow down the loading time of your website. To resolve this issue, you need to figure out which plugins are absolutely necessary to keep, and which ones are okay to discard. Plugins that are not serving any logical purpose for your website should be deleted.
9. Problematic Redirects
In the case of landing page redirects, Google clearly explains why they have such a negative effect on loading times. More processing time is required when a redirect it used, which will delay the load time of a page. You are basically loading two pages at once instead of only one. The page that was clicked on and the page that you were redirected to are the pages you choose to load. The more redirects that occur before you reach your desired location on a website will add to the time you have wait for each page to load.
For example, this is the third version of this blog post (true story). This is what the different URLs could have looked like, over time:
- Frist, jjlyonsmarketing.com [/version 1]
- Second, jjlyonsmarketing.com [/version 2] -> When this was created, the first version would have had a redirect, so when someone goes to that URL, they will be sent here instead.
- Third, jjlyonsmarketing.com [/version 3] -> When this was create, the second version would also have a redirect, so when someone goes to that URL, they will be sent here.
Using the example above, when someone clicks that first link, that page starts to load and then they are kicked over to the second link. Then, the second page starts to load and they are kicked to the third link. This process can continue to repeat for each new version.
When websites load slowly, it’s often because of a redirect issue, as described above. The better process is to change each old URL, so they link directly to the new version. That will speed up the load time.
10. Underperforming Computer
Sometimes websites load slowly, not because of the website itself, but because of the computer that’s loading the website.
If you keep a computer for a long period of time, it will eventually start to show its age especially if it hasn’t been updated. An older computer without updates is likely to have multiple problems when processing the loading times of today’s websites. Code and data don’t stay stagnant over the years. In fact, they constantly change just as frequently as computers get updated.
Key indicators of page loading times slowing down on your computer could rest in the hardware components of your computer. If your hard drive is nearly full of files, or if your computer doesn’t have enough memory (RAM), then you will need to perform maintenance on your computer. For most users 8 GB of RAM is a sufficient enough amount of memory, but if you run a business that requires more storage space for files, then this amount can vary.
Other reasons for an underperforming computer include an overheating processor and a fragmented hard drive. A processor that performs normal daily functions of a computer will heat up, and this is why computers have a fan inside. The processor gets cooled down by the fan. If your processor is overheating, then the fan may be obstructed in some way. Newly saved files on your computer may become fragmented when they are written over to free up space on your hard drive. Fragments of a file can exist in multiple places, so whenever a file is opened, the processor must retrieve all fragments from all parts of the hard drive. 11. Not Using gZIP Compression
Bundling all of the web objects that can potentially slow down the loading time of your website before sending them to the requesting browser is a wise practice to perform. This act of bundling can be if you enable gZIP compression. In the most basic sense, compression of data and files lowers the response time of a website by reducing the size of the data that needs to be transferred between your server and the browser of a visitor. This ultimately helps in serving the requested content at a much faster pace.

12. No Content Delivery Network Service
Another reason websites load slowly is because they sometimes don’t have a Content Delivery Network (CDN). It is key to have this kind of network in place while you create a website because it helps ensure your website is served to a visitor from the nearest available data center.
This is another way to decrease page loading time. If you don’t have a CDN in place, then it will become problematic to give users the data and information they are seeking from your site. With a shorter distance to travel, it will take less time for data to reach a user’s device from your server. While this isn’t a mandatory thing to do, it is highly recommended to have a CDN. Frequently accessed data is properly cached by a CDN, which means your website will benefit from a solid method of organization.
